60's and 70's Costume Ideas
The 1960s and 1970s are two decades where you can probably find more costume inspiration than any other! In one episode of Mad Men, they said in the early 60's every woman was either a Marilyn or a Jackie, a bombshell in a wiggle dress or a prim lady in white gloves. (Though where do the go go dancers with their mini skirts and go go boots fit into that?) Their male counterparts were either buttoned-down fellows in skinny ties and horn-rimmed glasses, Beatniks, or shaggy-haired boys trying to ride the wave of the Beatles' and other British Invasion bands' popularity. On the other side of the spectrum was the hippie counter-culture. Flower children wore bell bottom blue jeans, fringed vests, psychedelic prints, and love beads. They wore their hair long and their sunglasses round.
The 70's saw a loosening up of fashion attitude that was a precursor to the general casualness of today's attire. In other words, the hippies won! The hairsprayed bouffant of the 60's gave way to long, straight hair parted in the middle. The rock and pop stars of the 70's wore "groovy" jumpsuits, super-tight bell bottom pants, afros, and platform shoes, so naturally, all the kids wanted to wear them, too. When disco music and disco dancing became popular by the late 70's, polyester leisure suits, glitzy fabrics that would glitter under the disco ball, and feathered hair became all the rage.
Dressing up for a 60's or 70's party offers so many fun possibilities. See some ideas below inspired by the famous people and characters from music, movies and TV shows of the 60s and 70s!
