Going Grey’s

Friday, September 28th, 2007

Grey’s Anatomy is one of my favorite shows (despite my hatred for the George-Izzie thing), and since the new season premiered last night, I thought I’d take a look at the options for creating a costume based on a Grey’s character. There are so many options on your own or as a couple … after all, nearly everyone has hooked up at some point!

First, you’ll need scrubs and a lab coat.

Then just add whatever wig and accessories best fit your character. For Callie, a long dark wig. For Izzie, a wavy blonde wig. For Meredith, I like this deluxe light brown/honey blonde wig. This short brown wig would even be good for George. For a comical twist on Dr. McDreamy and his famous hair, you could even wear this wavy black wig.

To make it clear you’re not just any doctor – you’re a Grey’s surgeon! – add a simple name tag that says your name or nickname (think Dr. McSteamy, Dr. McDreamy or the Nazi). You could also add latex gloves and a surgeon’s cap, or splatter your costume with fake blood.

Jessica and Roger Rabbit

There’s never been a cartoon character quite as sexy as Jessica Rabbit, the red-haired vixen whose heart belonged to lovable, goofy Roger Rabbit.

It’s the perfect couple costume – the girl gets to look sexy, and the dude doesn’t have to try too hard. Just some white bunny ears and a tail on top of a regular outfit will get the point across, though a red outfit and colorful bowtie wouldn’t hurt.

Goddess of the Hunt and her Prey

Friday, September 14th, 2007

Even if you’ve never studied Greek and Roman mythology, you’ve probably heard of Aphrodite, goddess of love. She’s still a part of pop culture – her son Cupid is pretty popular around Valentine’s Day, and we’ve all seen a print of that famous Aphrodite-on-the-half-shell painting by Botticelli.

But have you heard of Diana (also known as Artemis), goddess of the hunt? She was just as famous as Aphrodite and had a twin brother, Apollo. She was supposed to be young, beautiful and athletic, and she usually carried a bow and arrows.

So if you’d like to be a goddess – but not the same old goddess – why not be Diana? For a fun and creative couple costume – one no one else at the party will have –  your significant could dress up as your prey. A stag (deer) would make the point best, but you could also be a wild boar or maybe even a rabbit.

And of course, you won’t have to go into all this explanation. Just lift your chin and say in your best queen-of-the-world voice, ”I’m Diana, goddess of the hunt, and this is my prey!”
