Halloween at Work

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

I dressed up in this adorable Racy Rag Doll costume by InCharacter for my neighbors’ Halloween party last week, but I wanted something more low-key for work today. A sexy short costume is great for a party, but I don’t really want to show my butt at work, y’know?

So I’m wearing a black wrap dress from Old Navy with an orange cami underneath, candy corn earrings, a necklace made from a Victorian Halloween postcard, and black peeptoe pumps (to up the sexy-witch, not granny-witch factor).

Darnit, when I was rushing around the house this morning, I couldn’t find my witch hat left over from my Hermione costume last year. Maybe I’ll find an orange wig instead …

If you’re looking for a work- or church-appropriate costume, check out our Classic Costumes section. Or just wear a hat or crazy sunglasses.

Unique Dark Fairy

If you prefer a costume no one else will be wearing, why not build your own? You can create your own spin on a dark fairy costume with a few mix-and-match accessories in black, purple, silver and red:

1. Dark fairy wings (see our Wings section for more options)

2. Black fantasy skirt or a black pixie hem skirt or black dress. Or turn a witch costume into a fairy costume.

3. Black fishnet pantyhose or thigh highs. Tear holes in them for a more goth look. (see our Hosiery section for lots of options)

4. Striped tights, thigh highs or knee highs (see our Hosiery section).

4. Funky false eyelashes (see our Eyelashes section).

6. Lots of make-up! Try dark eyeliner and a sprinkling of glitter on the cheekbones, or go for a white face with dark eyes and red, black or silver lips.

7. A wild wig in black or a combination of black and another color, like this black and purple one:

(see more options in our Gothic Wigs section).

Going on a Three-Hour Tour?

Thursday, October 18th, 2007

If you’re going to a 60′s party or just want a fun couple costume, you could dress up as the characters from Gilligan’s island. The show was on the air from 1964 to 1967, so these are perfect for 60′s party costumes. And Gilligan’s Island costumes are ideal if you’re looking for something recognizable, campy, and a little unexpected.

There are lots of options for combinations, too – Mary Ann and Gilligan, Skipper and Gilligan, Professor and Ginger, Thurston Howell III and Lovie. Or you could get together several friends and go as a group. Throw in a few island natives, astronauts and celebrity guest stars to round out the group!

And remember all the great stuff they made out of coconuts and palm fronds? You could carry around a coconut shaped drinking cup to add a little island-castaway authenticity to your costume.

See our Gilligan’s island Costumes page for the whole gang!
